ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:

Naxos specializes in classical music CDs, but they also have a small "musicals" series that features original scores to Broadway and film productions. This CD puts the spotlight on Cole Porter. "Can-Can" features Gwen Verdon's 1953 star making performance represented here on the Capitol Records cast album of songs from the show. Hans Conried, who starred in Summer Stock with Judy and Gene, is also featured. The Decca Records set of recordings from Porter's little known "Mexican Hayride" feature Gypsy Rose Lee's sister, June Havoc (the same June who is the basis for "Dainty June" in the hit musical "Gypsy" based on Rose Lee's memoirs).

The tracks from The Pirate are the MGM Records versions. The sound is very good - a nice, crisp mono.

This CD is a must-have for any fan of Cole Porters musicals. It is only available outside the U.S. as noted on the CD packaging and booklet. The packages also notes that it's "Made in the EU".
