ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:

An excellent compilation from Rhino/TCM Movie Music. Irving Berlin was one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century - if not THE greatest. His closest competitors would be Cole Porter and Jerry Herman who both, like Berlin, are some of the few who wrote the words and the music without collaboration. One CD simply cannot hold all of the amazing songs he wrote, but for a single release this CD manages to present a good variety of performances.

Included here are several previously unreleased performances, most notably Ethel Merman's outtake of "Marching Along With Time" from Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938 20th Century-Fox).

Also of note are two tracks from MGM's 1948 Easter Parade: "Stepping Out With My Baby" by Fred Astaire is the rare stereo version - although it's only partial as not all of the sound elements survived to make a complete stereo track; and Ann Miller's "Shaking The Blues Away" is longer than the version heard on the Rhino soundtrack CD as it includes the drum riffs towards the end of the number. Plus, the first few bars of instrumental into to Betty Hutton's "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun" from 1950's Annie Get Your Gun are slightly different that what was released on the official Rhino soundtrack in 2000.
