ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:

Like Judy, Fred Astaire spent his entire lifetime in show business. And like Judy, he could "do it all": sing, act, handle comedy, and most of all dance beautifully. This Rhino/TCM Movie Music anthology is an excellent overview of Fred's career at M-G-M and a "must have" for any fan of Fred, movie musicals, or the Great American Songbook.

Several tracks are making their CD debut here. What's interesting for Judy collectors is that the producers chose to use the M-G-M Records version of the abridged "A Couple Of Swells" from Easter Parade. As noted in the Production Notes by George Feltenstein: "The condition of the surviving music master for a "A Couple Of Swells" compelled us to use the master from the original soundtrack album with shortened vamps and dance breaks because of its superior sonics." The Rhino soundtrack CD of the entire score for Easter Parade uses a very muffled low-fidelity playback disc for the complete "Swells". Again, we wonder why they didn't simply use the actual film soundtrack as they did for "I Want To Go Back To Michigan". However, for soundtrack collectors, it's nice to have a good quality CD version of the M-G-M Records version of "Swells", so this is a minor quibble.
