ABOUT THE DISC & RECORDINGS:

Here is the hard to find promotional CD from Rhino and TCM. In 1997, the Rhino/TCM soundtrack CD production was in full swing, and this CD was sent out as a sampling of the variety, and rarity, of the contents of their recently released and upcoming soundtrack CDs.

This CD is notable to Judy Garland fans because on page 3 of the 24 page booklet there is a listing of the "Soundtracks available from the Turner Classic Movies Music/Rhino Movie Music Collection". Among the CDs listed is "Judy Garland Collectors' Box". This boxed set was never released. According to what a source has told us, Rhino/TCM Music co-producers George Feltenstein and Bradley Flanagan (as well as sometimes co-producer Marilee Bradford) had the Garland boxed set either ready for release or almost ready. Then, around the time this "Sounds Of TCM" CD came out, there was a change in ownership of the recordings (the same time the certain copyrights of the MGM film library moved from Turner-MGM/UA to Warner Bros. as well), and while Rhino still had the rights to continue releasing the pre-recordings, Mr. Flanagan & Ms. Bradford left the company. Within a few short years, Rhino would slow down the production of the TCM Music CDs due to sales figures and an apparent disinterest in continuing the series outside of their online-only "handmade" series. The Garland set was a causality of this sequence of events, as we're told it was a pet project of Ms. Bradford's.

To date, no Garland set has been announced and it's doubtful we'll see one as the cost of producing the set versus the projected returns prohibit it. In the fall of 2004, Rhino and TCM produced a few soundtracks (The Belle Of New York & Deep In My Heart) for availability on iTunes only. They also made available on iTunes many of the soundtracks already released on CD. This gave Garland fans hope that perhaps the boxed set would be produced, even if only for download from iTunes. But nothing happened. "Never say never" though. Perhaps they might produce the boxed set, since it's our understanding that it was basically ready. Time will tell, but since it's been over 10 years since this first announcement of the set, we're cautiously optimistic!

This CD was also issued, again as a sampler that was not for sale, housed in a replica of a film tin and titled "Now Playing In A Stereo Near You!"
